Cara Dillon -"Hill of Thieves"

Cara Dillon is one of Ireland's great singers, with an intriguing history behind her. In the 90s she took over from Kate Rusby in Equation, an attempted young British supergroup that also featured the folk scene's three best-known brothers, Sam, Sean and Seth Lakeman. Since then, like several of those involved in that badly handled project, she has done far better as a soloist, working with her partner, Sam Lakeman. Her new album, recorded for their own label, comes after an extended career break following the premature birth of her twins, and features all the Lakemans, with Sam providing most of the guitar, piano and percussion work, and also working as producer, co-arranger and even photographer. The result is a cool, relaxed treatment of almost exclusively traditional songs on which Dillon's singing is as fine as ever and the variety is provided by the changes in instrumentation. So there's a swirl of whistle and uilleann pipes on the title track, drifting piano settings from Sam on well-known songs such as The Parting Glass or She Moved Through the Fair, and a more urgent, upbeat treatment of Spencer the Rover, driven on by Seth Lakeman's guitar, vocals and fiddle work.
